- <p> DIED. Sidney Janis, 93, internationally known gallery owner
- and an early enthusiast for the abstract expressionist and Pop
- art schools; in New York City. Born in Buffalo, the dapper
- dealer was once a hoofer on the vaudeville circuit. Janis opened
- his first gallery in 1948, showing works by such European
- masters as Jean Arp, Robert Delaunay and Henri Rousseau. Alfred
- Barr, founding director of the Museum of Modern Art, called
- Janis the "most brilliant new dealer to have appeared in New
- York since the war."
